Based on his book, The Road Home, Ethan will guide us in an exploration of the profound effect compassion practices can have on society.  He reveals how our individual quests for self-awareness ripple forward into relationships, communities, and society at large. Ethan explains exactly how, by turning our awareness to what’s happening around us and inside us, we become able to enhance our sense of connection with others and, at the same time, change for the better our individual and collective patterns of greed, apathy, and inattention.

By letting go of habits and assumptions, we begin to understand our true motivations and intentions, allowing us to create wise solutions to global problems such as consumerism, environmental damage, and societal inequity.  This topic is of great importance in times of social upheaval and protest movements such as we are experiencing today.

Ethan Nichtern is a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition as well as the author of One City: A Declaration of Interdependence.

He is also the founder of The Interdependence Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to secular Buddhist study and Transformational Activism. He has taught meditation and Buddhist studies classes and retreats across the United States since 2002.
