Meditation

Meditation is a natural state of the human mind—at rest, open, alert. The practice of meditation has been taught for over 2,500 years as a vehicle for realizing the beauty and magic of the ordinary world without aggression or manipulation.

You can learn to meditate at our Monday Night Open House.

The Shambhala teachings emphasize the wakefulness inherent in every situation or state of mind. Through discipline, gentleness and a sense of humor, the practitioner is invited to let go of conflicting emotions and wake up on the spot.

Meditation is the foundation of all we do at the Kootenay Shambhala Centre. This ancient practice of self-discovery is rooted in the simple but revolutionary premise that every human being has the ability to cultivate the mind’s inherent stability, clarity and strength in order to be more awake, compassionate and effective in everyday life.

About Meditation Instruction

The Kootenay Shambhala Centre provides free meditation instruction to anyone interested. We offer introductory instruction to newcomers, and further instruction to other practitioners, on Monday nights as part of our weekly Open House and at other times by request.

Ongoing Meditation Instruction is available for both members and non-members. We all find ourselves challenged when we find our meditation practice stale, frustrating or even non-existent. You are not alone in this place on the path of meditation. Experienced instructors trained in the Shambhala tradition can encourage with helpful reminders and perhaps simply by actively listening to ‘what is going on’ for you. Especially in this time of social isolation when meditation is a vital link to our sanity, please do not hesitate to reach out for support in your practice. A face-to-face one on one interview can be set up at the Center or via a Zoom link. Contact Lynn Dragone at [email protected]

In-depth meditation instruction is available through our Way of Shambhala courses and retreats.

Meditation instruction is not just for new practitioners; it is also recommended as part of ongoing practice. We welcome you to speak to an instructor about your practice anytime. You can also request an ongoing working relationship with an instructor.

Meditation Instructors

Shambhala meditation instructors are senior Shambhala practitioners specially trained and authorized to help people deepen, expand and stabilize their understanding and experience of meditation.

We encourage anyone interested in this journey to work with the meditation instructor of their choice. This relationship is based on friendship, mentoring, and confidentiality. Arrangements are entirely individualized; they can range from a meeting or two to clarify points of practice to an ongoing relationship involving more regular meetings.

Meditation instructors currently available are listed below. Please feel free to contact any of them directly. For help connecting with an instructor, email us at [email protected].
